Dear Glenbrook Families,
Four Mondays left in the month of June – how did we get here already! What an amazing year we have had so far!
June is always a busy month with celebrations such as Grade 6 Farewell, Provincial Achievement Tests, and welcoming new Kindergarten students for the next school year. AMA Patrol members will be attending a celebration at Heritage Park with Mr. Kowalchuk as well. Grade 1 are watching caterpillars grow into butterflies, students are learning how to read notes and play instruments, grades 4 and 5 are becoming “geniuses” on a topic that interests them, while Kindergarten is learning about spring through art and Grade 2/3 is continuing to publish their own fractured fairy tales.
In addition to academics, we continue to have our students strive to demonstrate leadership in different ways. This means that students:
- Show kindness and gratitude
- Follow expectations consistently
- Show responsibility
- Model respectful behavior and active listening
- Ask thoughtful questions
- Encourage others to do their best
- Demonstrate perseverance
- Support classroom routines without being asked
- Help others feel included
- Set goals and reflect on their progress
- Take ownership for mistakes and learn from them
- Demonstrate curiosity and creativity
- Help create safe and inclusive learning environments
- Show independence and self-regulation
Ask your child how they do these things throughout the day at school. The definition of leadership that we have shared with students:
- Leadership means using your words, actions and choices to help yourself and others do their best.
- A leader is kind, responsible, respectful and willing to help their school community grow.
- Leadership is helping others, making good choices, and setting a positive example.
Thank you for being such an important part of our school community and assisting your children in understanding what leadership means.
With appreciation,
Cindy & Diana
Provincial Achievement Exams
In May and June of this year Grade 6 students across the province will participate in the Provincial Achievement Tests (PATs) in English Language Arts and Literature (ELAL), Mathematics, and Science. Grade 6 Social Studies PAT, based on optionally implemented new curriculum in the 2025-26 school year, will not be administered in 2025-26.
Results from these tests will provide Alberta Education, school administrators, teachers, parents/guardians, students, and the public with information about what students know and can do in relation to provincial standards at the end of Grade 6. These results can be used to improve learning opportunities for students.
Please ensure that you check updates from your child’s teacher on the classroom’s google classroom and our school website. The next PAT will be written on Thursday, June 4.
Playground Build Update:
To make way for the new playground build, the playground will be shut down very soon. There will be fencing installed to keep the playground area safe for the community and students as the playground equipment is removed. This is scheduled to take place beginning June 3. That means the playground will be off limits and students and families should stay clear of the fencing. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Kindergarten Orientation for Next Year Kindergarten Students:
We will be hosting a Kindergarten Orientation for the 2026–2027 school year at Glenbrook School. This session will take place on Thursday, June 11, 2026, from 6:30–7:15 PM in the school gym.
This orientation is for all parents and children who will be starting Kindergarten in Fall 2026. Families will have the opportunity to learn about Glenbrook School and prepare for the upcoming school year.
School Council Message
On Monday, the Glenbrook Parent Council met with our Principal and Assistant Principal to hear school updates and begin planning for the end of the school year and the year ahead.
Our Parent Council is made up of a small but dedicated group of parents and caregivers who help organize events, support school initiatives, and lead fundraising efforts that directly benefit Glenbrook students. These efforts help provide field trips, programs, learning opportunities, and supplies that enrich our school community.
As we look ahead to next year, we would love to welcome more parents and caregivers to get involved in ways that fit their time, interests, and availability. Whether you can help occasionally at events, assist with organizing volunteers, sharing ideas, or support fundraising efforts, every contribution makes a difference.
If you are interested in learning more or getting involved, please reach out to us at glenbrookpc@gmail.com. We would be happy to connect with you.
Playground
We are also excited to share that we are now just $2,500 away from reaching our playground fundraising goal! The teardown of our current playground is scheduled to begin in early June. A heartfelt thank you to Michelle Ibbotson for her incredible leadership and dedication in guiding the playground redevelopment project.
As we move into the final stages of the project, we are looking for volunteers to help support the completion of our new playground space. In August, we will need help watering the newly installed sod to help the grass establish over the summer. We are also beginning to plan for a future playground grand opening celebration and would love support with planning or participating in that event.
If you are interested in helping with the playground project in any way, please contact Michelle Ibbotson at glenbrookplayground@gmail.com.
