Glenbrook Growler Feb. 12-16 | Joy, Black History Month, Jump Rope for Heart, Hitmen Game, Pink Shirt Day

Hello Glenbrook Families

Well- we slipped into February with some icy conditions. So nice to see the weather warming up and as we know in Calgary, we will definitely see a lot of ice as the freeze-thaw-freeze cycle happens repeat. Please remember to walk like a penguin and stay safe out there!

Remember to take time for yourselves this weekend.

Next week is a short week with Thursday and Friday as Non-Instructional Days for students while support staff and teaching staff attend their annual conventions.

Jump Rope for Heart encourages kids to have a positive attitude towards exercise, healthy eating, and heart health while raising vital funds to fight heart disease.

Telus Be Brave Event

Successful students were notified today if they would attend the event. The event will be during school hours on Wednesday, February 28 and a fieldtrip form will go home on February 9 to the 20 students. Students will also receive a special T-shirt to wear to the event.

Pink Shirt Day – February 28, 2024

The Pink Shirt Day Story

In 2007, Berwick Nova Scotia, after a new student at their school was bullied for wearing a pink shirt, two grade 12 students bought 50 pink shirts and encouraged their classmates to wear pink. The next day they went to distribute the shirts and to their surprise, the majority of the students arrived wearing pink! With that, the act of kindness, Pink Shirt Day was born.

In recognition of the Berwick event, Nova Scotia proclaimed the second Thursday of September “Stand Up Against Bullying Day.” In 2008, British Columbia proclaimed February 27 to be the provincial anti-bullying day, and the movement has continued to grow. In 2012, the United Nations declared May 4 as Anti-Bullying Day, and now the last Wednesday each February is Canada’s national Pink Shirt/anti-bullying day.

Many countries now recognize specific days for raising awareness about the prevention of bullying and promoting kindness and inclusion. In Canada, many students have heard the Pink Shirt Day message from kindergarten through to their high school graduation. The movement continues to grow.

Scholastic Book Fair

Dear Parents and Families,

I’m excited to announce that our school will be hosting a Scholastic Book Fair, which will take place from March 18 – March 22 at Glenbrook Elementary.

The Scholastic Book Fair empowers our students to choose books they love, and with so many options, they’re sure to find themselves in the pages. This year’s Fair is going to be epic, but we need volunteers to make it happen. We hope that you can offer your time and talents to help students become Bolder, Prouder, and Stronger Readers—which in turn makes them bolder, prouder, and stronger individuals. And since every purchase benefits our school, helping is twice as rewarding.

If you’re available to lend a hand at this upcoming event, please contact me and share which shifts you are available for and how many you can do. Opportunities to assist include:
