Pink Shirt Day— Wednesday, February 28
Please join us by wearing a PINK shirt! The focus of this day is to remind students of the importance of working together and treating others with dignity and respect
Black History Month
During the month of February, Calgary Board of Education students and staff will celebrate and explore the many contributions of Black Canadians, peoples, and communities worldwide. Black History Month is an opportunity for schools to amplify and spotlight the innovative, courageous, and inspiring voices, stories, and contributions of Black Canadians and communities. Throughout the month of February, the Calgary Public Library is hosting events dedicated to celebrating the lives, legacies, and voices of Black peoples and communities.
On Tuesday, Feb. 13, the Central Library will feature Black History Month: Jon Cornish “Power and Privilege in an Intersectional Life." Cornish will unravel the complexities of his unique journey as a person of mixed heritage, navigating a world rife with stereotypes and misconceptions. He will highlight the intricate interplay of race, culture, and geography in shaping identity while challenging the audience to re-examine their perceptions, biases, and often-mistaken assumptions.
On Sunday, Feb. 25, the Central Library in partnership with the Chinook County Historical Society will be hosting a screening and discussion of the film John Ware Reclaimed by filmmaker Cheryl Foggo, which follows her quest to re-examine the mythology surrounding John Ware, the Black cowboy who settled Alberta before the turn of the 20th Century. Foggo's research uncovers who this iconic figure might have been, and what his legacy means in terms of anti-Black racism.
Newcomer Settlement Partnerships and Resources
The CBE English As An Additional Language (EAL) Service Unit would like to share community supports which includes our partnerships with both the Calgary Catholic Immigration Society (CCIS) and Calgary Bridge Foundation for Youth (CBFY). The Settlement Agencies provide integral free program support and services to newcomer and refugee families.
Kindergarten Registration Opened Monday January 15, 2024
Glenbrook School has both an AM and a PM Kindergarten class. Times will be TBD for next year and announced when this decision takes place. This year the times for our Kindergarten program are:
Monday – Friday AM: 9:00 – 12:00 PM Monday – Friday PM: 12:50 – 3:50 PM
When registering for Kindergarten; parents will state their preference for either AM or PM Kindergarten class that they hope to register their child in when they complete the registration forms. We will do our best to accommodate everyone's wishes. However, a random draw, that is both fair and equitable, will take place to fill any vacant spots in either the AM or PM class, whichever has the most spaces remaining to a max class size. This class size will be determined following the processing of registrations. Our Kindergarten open house will be announced at a later date.
All registered students will receive confirmation of these details.
If your child is attending the Maple Roots Before & After School program, please email the general email inbox to indicate this at glenbrook@cbe.ab.ca
