Inspiration

“We are wired to do hard things” - Carrington

We know that many of you have been hearing the news of the conflict in the Middle East. The events in Israel, the Gaza Strip and other parts of the Middle East are cause for concern around the world. The situation is evolving quickly. Mahoga- ny school is a community, the school community is a neutral place of safety, kind- ness and compassion for all students, staff and families, no matter what your per- sonal beliefs or position may be. We are a school community that believes in and demonstrates inclusivity, respects diversity and fosters a sense of belonging. Together we will support our students and teachers, while respecting the var- ied needs, values and beliefs in our school community. Currently, more than ever we see the importance of kindness and empathy. All students need to feel safe, respected, welcome and included in schools. We can do hard things but when we do them together it is so much better. Please know that we are here for you if you need support during this time. We are stronger together.

Chapters Indigo Adopt a School

Glenbrook School, has been selected to participate in the 2023 Indigo Adopt a School (AAS) Program – a partnership between the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation and Indigo Books & Music Inc.

We are delighted to be participating in this year’s Adopt a School fundraiser which will run from October 10 – 31! During these three weeks, our partner store will fundraise on behalf of our school and our school can also fundraise by collecting cash donations or through our school’s online fundraising page linked through this link: Indigo Love of Reading - Glenbrook School

Our partner store(s) this year is Indigo Signal Hill located in the Signal Hill Centre S.W. You can also donate in person at the store if you shop there. Please share this link with family and friends and help us achieve our fundraising goal. All funds will be used to purchase books for our school library.

Common Language

At Glenbrook School, we have created and live by sharing our common language. Our common language is”

  • Be Kind
  • Be safe
  • Be Friendly
  • Be Caring
  • Be Responsible

When we work with our students we apply this language to each student being a leader, every day, regard- less of their grade. Leaders are not a leader in the moment, but rather leaders in an ongoing way, always thinking about how to motivate and guide others. A good student leader understands their responsibility as a role model to the younger students. Not only do they recognize this responsibility, but a good leader is excited about the opportunity to lead and guide others! They would never ask anyone to do anything that they are not willing to do themselves. When we catch our students demonstrating leadership, we are awarding them Leadership bracelets.

Secret Path Week October 17-22

As a Glenbrook school community, we continue to embed Indigenous ways of being, belonging, doing, and knowing as part our ReconciliACTIONs. Our understanding builds as we interact and learn from the land, re- flect and share, hear and speak stories, celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ contributions and deepen our connec- tions. Our acknowledgement spans far beyond truth and reconciliation week and orange shirt day.

As a proud Downie Wenjack legacy school, we are committed to listening, learning and acting. Secret Path Week is a national movement which occurs annually from Oct 17th-22nd. The week was inspired by Chanie Wenjack, a victim of the residential school system. We will start our work around the Walk for Wenjack by committing to walk a distance dependent on age or grade.

Our teachings surrounding this will be solidified through sharing circles and classroom lessons.

Check out the link below to find out more about reconciliACTIONs happening throughout Canada and learn more about what it means to be a Legacy School.
