Hello Glenbrook Families!

Super Moon, Comets and Northern Lights...it seems like the sky is trying to tell us to look up and remember that we are a part of something bigger than ourselves. I have been on a quest since last year to see the Northern Lights and have missed them more times than I can count. I finally saw them last week and I was in awe. Such beauty and unexpected spectacular colors. This week my next quest, the comet was conquered. I spent a lot of time waiting for the clouds to pass and my patience paid off. I am not sure if it is the years of teaching Sky Science as a Grade 6 teacher, but I am in awe of these sky events. It reminds me to take a breath, look deeply and be present. Without taking the time to look up, be patient and also to enjoy the moment when it comes. I feel like this is the lesson I was supposed to learn – especially all the other times that I missed out. This will be my goal this weekend. To enjoy the weather (I hear it is about to change Monday) and to take time to enjoy the leaves, the cloudy October sky and hopefully see some more spectacular scenes in the evening sky.

I wish for you all to be able to find the time to experience these amazing sights and if nothing else to pause to look, truly look around and enjoy this fabulous fall season.

Have an amazing weekend everyone! Unplug and connect.

Take care,

Cindy

Updates and Administrivia

Halloween

This year at Glenbrook School we will celebrate Halloween by allowing students who would like to dress up in a costume to do so on October 31. Classes will not be having parties but may engage in Halloween or Autumn-focused learning activities. We know that this is a big day for children, and we also recognize that not all families celebrate Halloween. As an inclusive environment we want to make sure all students feel comfortable and safe at school. Teachers will also provide alternative activities for students who do not participate in Halloween. We know that many of our families look forward to Halloween each year and welcome the opportunity to capitalize on our students’ excitement to enhance their learning.

We know that some families will want their children to wear costumes to school and some may want to save them for community events after school hours. On October 31, we welcome students to wear their costumes or black & orange to school. Please send your child to school in whatever outfit (costume, regular clothes) so that we do not have to worry about lost items or clothing.

Students who wish to wear a costume must follow these rules when dressing up to celebrate:

  • Costumes are allowed
  • Costume masks are not allowed
  • No weapons or gore allowed
  • No costume accessories..... wands, gloves, broom, canes, etc
  • No outside or homemade treats or food to be brought into the school as there will be no sharing of food or parties
  • No costume parades/Halloween parties
  • Students must still be able to participate in Phys-Ed classes and all other learning opportunities that day
  • Students must dress appropriately for outside weather

Grizzly Time

In order to build a strong school community and connections across our school, we will have students take part in special Grizzly Time events throughout the school year. We have placed all students into multi-age groupings that will work together to achieve goals together. Each time they do, they can receive points for their teams. They will also receive points by taking part in some special events. These will be shared through teachers and this newsletter as they come about.

School Council Message

Meeting Information

Thank you to everyone who came out to our meeting this week! We were excited to see some new faces and get some ideas for fundraising. Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 20 at 7:00 PM. As always, all parents and guardians are encouraged to attend.

Fun Lunch

Our next fun lunch is Papa John’s Pizza on Thursday, November 21.  Parents/guardians must go to www.healthyhunger.ca to purchase your child’s lunch by Saturday, November 16.  Students who have not purchased online will not be receiving a fun lunch.  If your student is not in attendance on the day of Fun Lunch you can call the school office to arrange for pick up or let the school know if they can donate the lunch.

All fun lunches for the school year are now set up on Healthy Hunger.  You can order one at a time, a few at a time, or for the whole year!  Please note that December's fun lunch will be on the third Wednesday of the month (18) rather than the normal Thursday.

Kernels

Please keep an eye out for Kernels popcorn fundraiser forms going home with your students next week!  Each snack size bag holds approximately 2.5 cups of popcorn and sells for $2.50.  The flavours available are: Buttersalt; Salt and Vinegar; White Cheddar; Dill Pickle; Thai Sweet Chili; Say Cheese Cheese; Jalapeno Jack; Cheesy Dill and Creamy Caramel.  Each bag is individually heat sealed and has a shelf life of 3 months.  These make great stocking stuffers!  Order forms will be due back on Friday, November 15.

Mabel's Labels

Did you know that we have an ongoing fundraiser with Mabel's Labels? These amazing labels are dishwasher and laundry safe, last forever and come in lots of fun designs. Place your order online and it will get shipped straight to your door. School Council will receive a 20% commission! Just click here to go to our Mabel's Label's fundraiser and search for Glenbrook School Council.
