Hello Glenbrook Families!

Crisp mornings, changing leaves, and the excitement of fall learning—it has been a full and meaningful week at Glenbrook! September always brings with it both energy and adjustment: new classrooms, new friendships, and new routines. With that comes both joy and challenge, but together we find ways to support one another and keep our focus on what matters most—our students.

Each day is filled with moments worth celebrating: a breakthrough in learning, a kind gesture between classmates, or the laughter that reminds us of the simple joy of being together. These moments bring us back to our “why” and highlight the magic of Glenbrook—collaboration, care, and community.

This time of year also calls us to pause and reflect. As we approach Orange Shirt Day, we remember the children who were taken to residential schools and the impact that history has on families and communities today. Wearing orange is one way we affirm that every child matters and continue our journey of Truth and Reconciliation through listening, learning, and building understanding with our students.

We are grateful to walk this path of learning and growing alongside all of you.

Take care,

Cindy & Tracey

Inspiration

“Education is the most powerful tool we can use to change the world.”

Weekly Wonder

What does reconciliation look like in your home, and how can you help students feel that they matter each and every day?

Connection Corner

This week, take a moment to ask students what “Every Child Matters” means to them, and how we can live that message in our school community.

Busing and Transportation

Bus stop information is now available in your MyCBE account. Busing is not managed at the school level. If you have any questions related to bussing, you should contact the CBE Transportation department via email at transportation@cbe.ab.ca

Transportation Safety Messages 2025-26

Safe Streets

  • Keeping streets safe is a shared responsibility.

Drivers:

  • Be patient, even when you are running late. Take time to make safe and smart decisions.
  • Obey the posted speed limit and drive cautiously when children are present.
  • Watch for school buses. They have big blind spots, poor manoeuvrability and need lots of space to move.
  • Scan for pedestrians between parked vehicles as pedestrians may step out unexpectedly.
  • Do not enter school bus loading zones, stop or park in designated zones only so buses can safely pull into their designated space.
  • Avoid making U-turns in a playground zone or near crosswalks.
  • Always obey school safety patrols.
  • Pedestrians have the right of way at all intersections and crosswalks (unless controlled by traffic signal/device or as directed by a police officer).
  • Watch for pedestrian activated signals (flashers), a pedestrian may be using the crosswalk.
  • Do not double park to drop-off/pick-up students. This puts the students at risk as they get in and out of the vehicle in the traffic lane.
  • Stop for pedestrians crossing at all marked and unmarked crosswalks and intersections.
  • Stay alert and focused. Do not drive distracted, that means no talking/texting on a phone.
  • Never pass a vehicle at a crosswalk or in a playground zone.
  • Never stop or park within 5 m (one car length) of a crosswalk, intersection or stop sign. This will allow pedestrians to be seen as they step off the curb.
  • Turn with caution and always watch out for people crossing the street.
  • If possible, drive with students on the passenger side in the vehicle. This will allow passengers to get out of the vehicle on the sidewalk rather than into traffic.
  • Ways to avoid the congestion around the school:
    * drop-off/pick-up further away and walk to school
    * take advantage of early drop-off
    * carpool with friends and neighbors
    * walk, ride a bicycle or scooter/skateboard to school
    * use the school bus transportation service.

(According to the National Collision Database, school buses are the safest means of transporting to and from school. As of 2018, students are about 80 times more likely to get to school safely on a school bus than by car.)

Pedestrians:

  • Do not jaywalk or cross the street from between parked vehicles, especially buses.
  • Only cross the street at a safe spot, such as a corner or intersection.
  • Watch for turning vehicles and traffic that may not see you.
  • Look all directions before crossing.
  • Make eye contact with drivers before you begin crossing the street.
  • Stay alert and focused (do not text/talk on your phone, listen to headphones) while crossing the street.
  • Be visible, walk as a group and wear brighter clothing.

Reminders |  Footwear

Students must have two pairs of footwear at school each day.

One of the pairs is for indoor use and the other for outdoor use. The indoor shoes should have non-marking soles that they could use in the Physical Education program. As snow, dirt and mud in our hallways and classrooms create a safety hazard, we ask that outdoor footwear be removed at the students’ entrance. Platform shoes, roller shoes, flip-flops, and soccer cleats, etc. are not acceptable for safety reasons as well as maintaining school cleanliness.

Alberta Education Literacy and Numeracy Screenings

Students in Kindergarten - Grade 3 will once again be completing Provincial literacy and numeracy testing.

Fall screening dates for Grade 1-3 will be from September 15 to October 3, 2025.

Winter screening dates for Kindergarten - Grade 3 will be from January 19 to February 6, 2026.

Spring screening dates for Grade 1-3 will be from May 11 to 29, 2026.

Teachers will be working with students to complete these tests and will be able to use the data to help them with their classroom programming.

Orange Shirt Day and Truth and Reconciliation

We wear orange shirts on September 30 to honor the children who were taken to residential schools and to remember those who never came home. The orange shirt was chosen because of Phyllis Webstad’s story of having her new orange shirt taken away on her first day at a residential school. It has become a symbol of the loss of culture, family, and identity that many Indigenous children experienced. By wearing orange, we show that every child matters and commit ourselves to learning, listening, and working toward truth and reconciliation in Canada.

Healthy Hunger

Healthy Hunger is an easy online fundraising program that lets parents order special hot lunches and treats for their children while supporting our school. A portion of every order goes directly back to the school, helping fund activities and resources for our students. Simply sign up for Healthy Hunger at: https://healthyhunger.ca/  Create an account if needed, select our school, your child’s class and start ordering! Our first lunch date is October 29, 2025 from Dominos Pizza.

Casino

Our casino fundraiser is happening on Friday, November 7, and Saturday, November 8 at Cowboys Casino, and we need your help! There are several volunteer roles available, including banker, chip runner, count room, and cashier. No experience is required—our Casino Advisor and a team of three trainers will be there to guide and support us in our roles. Casinos generate over $60,000 for our school, making this fundraiser essential. All proceeds will go toward our playground rebuild project, so filling every position is crucial!

There are three shift options each day, and you’re welcome to sign up for multiple shifts or even volunteer on both days. However, if you do, you must remain in the same role throughout.
