Dear Glenbrook Families,

As we wrap up our second week of school, I want to take a moment to thank our students, staff, and families for helping create such a positive start to the year. It has been wonderful to see our hallways filled with smiling faces, renewed friendships, and enthusiastic learners eager to engage in their classrooms.

Our students have been busy establishing classroom routines, building relationships with their teachers and peers, and setting the foundation for a successful year of learning. We know that strong connections between home and school are essential to student success, and we appreciate the support you provide each day.

As we move further into September, we encourage families to stay connected by checking school communications regularly and reviewing upcoming dates and events. This is also a great time to establish consistent routines for attendance, bedtime, reading, and homework to help students thrive.

A few reminders for families:

  • Please ensure students arrive at school on time each day
  • If your child will be absent, notify the school office as early as possible
  • Review lunch and snack plans to ensure students have healthy options throughout the day
  • Continue to remind students about safe arrival and dismissal procedures around the school grounds. Discuss crossing the street using crosswalks safely.

This month, our staff and students will also be focusing on building a strong sense of belonging, kindness, and respect within our school community. We are proud of the caring and inclusive culture that makes Glenbrook such a special place to learn and grow.

Alberta Education Literacy and Numeracy Screeners K-5 students

Beginning in the 2026-2027 school year, school authorities are required to conduct literacy and numeracy screenings to all kindergarten to grade 5 children and students. Kindergarten screenings occur only in the Winter, while screenings for all students in grades 1 to 3 occur in both the Fall and Winter, with a Spring screening required for students identified as requiring additional supports from the Winter screening. Students in grades 4 and 5 are required to be screened in the Fall with an additional screening in Spring for those who required additional supports. While a Winter screening is not required for students in grades 4 and 5, it is encouraged.

Literacy and Numeracy Screeners will be administered between September 14 – October 2, 2026.

Why are Assessments Needed? Literacy and numeracy are important skills that develop during early childhood.

  • Assessing learners in their early years:
  • Provides essential information to teachers, schools, parents and Alberta Education about potential learning issues and needs.
  • Ensures learners get the help they need early in their education.
  • Monitors growth over time.
  • Supports a transparent, accountable, and responsive education system.

Understanding Universal Screeners

  • Results of Assessments Universal screeners do not replace day-to-day teacher observations and classroom assessment and do not have any impact on formal reporting processes such as report cards. Rather, the results of universal screeners help inform planning for next steps such as targeted interventions or instructional planning and are not used to determine grades.
  • Teachers engage in ongoing communication with parents/legal guardians throughout the year. Teachers communicate information learned from universal screeners with families and how it might impact an individual’s learning journey as appropriate. Together, they will support the learner’s academic growth and determine a path forward. There are number of ways you can learn more about your child’s learning, progress, and achievement.
  • Please speak to your child’s teacher if you have questions or concerns about their learning.

Hello Glenbrook Families,

We have a few exciting updates from the Glenbrook Parent Council!

The Playground is OPEN as of Monday!
Yay! After a lot of planning, fundraising, and work, our new playground is officially open.

A huge thank you to Michelle Ibbotson for the incredible amount of time, energy, fundraising, and planning she has put into making this project happen. We are very grateful for her leadership and for everyone in our school community who helped support the project along the way.

We will be celebrating the Grand Opening of the Playground during Meet the Teacher Night, and we hope you will join us!

Meet the Teacher Night
Come spend some time with other Glenbrook families, meet your child’s teacher, and enjoy the evening together.

There will be:

  • Food trucks
  • Popcorn
  • Playground Grand Opening
  • Time to connect with other families
  • An opportunity to meet your child’s teacher

Next Parent Council Meeting – September 21 at 4:00 PM

Our next Parent Council meeting will take place September 21 at 4:00 PM at the school.

All parents and caregivers are welcome. Parent Council meetings are a great way to hear about what is happening at Glenbrook, ask questions, share ideas, and learn more about ways you can participate in supporting our school community.

You do not have to be a Parent Council member to attend.
