Dear Glenbrook Families;
As we move into this busy time of year, our days are filled with learning, activities, and special events that make spring such an exciting season at school. Thank you for your continued support as students and staff work hard to finish the year strong.
Next week we will gather for a school assembly celebrating Springtime. Students will share their enthusiasm through performances, reflections, and learning that highlights growth, creativity, and community. Our students will shine in their performances and bring the positive energy that spring brings to our school. Thank you to Mr. Kowalchuk for all of his work on the assembly and organization of this.
Thank you to Mrs. Lombard and the students who have been cleaning our courtyard, putting together planters and learning about science while preparing things to grow.
We also want families to know that there will be a new playground built this summer which means the existing playground will be torn down in early June. Thank you to our wonderful School Council parents for all their efforts in raising money to build the new playground and for all the organizational pieces around the entire build. It is much work, and they will be looking for volunteers to help put the new playground together over the summer.
We appreciate all that families do to help keep routines running smoothly during this full and fast‑paced stretch of the year. Please continue to watch for updates and upcoming events as we head toward the final weeks of school.
With appreciation,
Cindy & Diana
Math and Literacy Games
School Council has provided our school with a variety of math and literacy games. We have put them into bags, and we have put them into our library Catalogue. Mrs. Montgomery has been talking to all the classes about these games and next week we will let students sign them out for a one-week loan. These games are intended to be played with families at home and a fun way to connect.
If you would like a game, you could also send Mrs. Montgomery a message at ramontgomery@cbe.ab.ca.
Please make sure all the game's pieces and items are back in the bag before returning it back to the school.
Early Years Assessments Grades 1,2 & 3
Students in Grades 1,2 and 3 who require additional support in literacy and numeracy based on previous screener results, will be writing these assessments from May 11 – 29. Alberta Education & Childcare collects information about literacy and numeracy screening assessments for all students in Kindergarten to Grade 3. Provincial assessment programs are meant to complement, not replace, day-to-day teacher observations and classroom assessment. Further information about screeners can be found in the General Information Bulletin – Literacy and Numeracy Screening found here AB ED Lit and Num
Celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week
Recently at Glenbrook School, we celebrated Support Staff Week and this week we celebrated Teacher Appreciation Week. We honor our awesome teachers at Glenbrook School and all across the CBE. If you’re able to give a shout-out through email to your child’s teacher this week, it would mean so much to them. Thank you for your ongoing support!
Kindergarten Registration Reminder
We are excited to share that Kindergarten registration is now open for the upcoming school year! If you have a child ready to start Kindergarten, we warmly encourage you to complete their registration soon. Families who register by May 31 will receive an invitation to our Kindergarten Open House—a wonderful opportunity to meet our staff, learn more about the program, and help your child feel comfortable and excited for the journey ahead
School Council Message
The next parent council meeting is May 25- in person at 7:00 PM and the next fun lunch is May 27.
Thank you to all the parents and families who came out to support the Spring Dance! Your presence, energy, and generosity helped make the evening a wonderful success. After expenses, nearly $200 was raised in support of the Glenbrook School Parent Council Society.
Every dollar raised goes directly back into building a vibrant and supportive school community for our children. Throughout the year, Parent Council helps organize Healthy Hunger fun lunches, staff and teacher appreciation initiatives, school community events, field trip and program fundraising, and special celebrations such as the Grade 6 Farewell, Welcome Back activities, and last-day-of-school treats.
None of this happens without volunteers. As we begin looking ahead to the 2026–2027 school year, we would love to welcome new parents and caregivers to join our team. Whether you are interested in taking on a larger role or simply helping with occasional events, every contribution makes a difference.
If you would be willing to get involved or would like to learn more, please email glenbrookpc@gmail.com — we would love to hear from you and work together to continue building a strong and connected school community.
Playground update – Letter from Playground Coordinator
I hope you’re doing well! My name is Michelle, and I’m a fellow parent at Glenbrook School. I’ve been coordinating and organizing details of the Playground Redevelopment Project, which will create a safe, accessible outdoor play space for our community. Construction is set to begin in Summer 2026, with work from June to September!!
We have partnered with Parks Foundation Calgary for support and secured Canadian Recreation Solutions as our playground developer. Aside from the support from parent council members, I’m currently the only parent on the Playground Committee and am seeking additional parents, guardians or school community members to help oversee the final planning stages and the project’s completion.
Below are critical to completing our project and will require volunteers:
- Help find other community volunteers for the landscaping portion of the project. The footprint of the new playground is smaller than the existing one. This involves physical volunteer work on 'site rehabilitation' with raking in loam and seed in the required areas.
- Daily watering of the loam and seed once completed. Further details to follow.
Below are other duties that this playground committee will be required to assist with:
- Offer playground support through volunteer work, where needed and if possible, during the summer months.
- Potential to initiate, organize and find donors willing to provide snacks or drinks on volunteer days.
- Ensuring proper documentation is collected when required.
Timelines for all events are TBD and depend on how our project progresses.
Below are ideas:
- Potential to assist with a grand opening day. This has not been confirmed, but an idea. This may include, but is not limited to, initiating donations (food, drinks, etc.) for the event, organizing details with parent council and CBE admin, finding volunteers, set/clean up, etc.
- Potential to assist with the creation of social content to recognize select donors for 2026-2027, if applicable.
Can I count on you to join the Playground Committee with me? I could use all the help I can get! Once I receive sufficient interest to form a committee, I'll be happy to arrange a virtual or in-person meeting at the school to discuss this further or answer any questions you may have. I hope to hear from you, and I genuinely appreciate your time, consideration, and interest in helping to see our playground project through.
Sincerely,
Michelle Ibbotson
